Make: Liberty Safes
Model: Centurion 24 gun safe.
Amount of gun storage advertised: 24 guns.
Amount of guns stored: 10 long guns and three handguns.
General contents: Shotguns, rifles, handguns, ammo, reloading equipment, silver coins, and silver flatware.
External configuration: Located in the basement of the house. The safe is bolted down into the concrete with Liberty’s anchoring hardware. The basement gets a little damp, so we put a foam mat underneath the safe to act as a moisture barrier for rust prevention.
Internal configuration: All of the long guns are on the right side, resting in the built-in gun rests. A center partition separates the long guns from miscellaneous valuables, including documents, silvers, and a revolver (still in the box). The upper shelf is used to store ammunition, reloading gear, and a couple more handguns.
Safe accessories: As mentioned, the safe is bolted to the concrete floor using a Liberty anchor kit. It also has a Drirod dehumidifier to keep the guns from rusting. The house has a Simplisafe security system, and a smoke detector in the basement near the safe.
Favorite guns and other notable contents:
F.I.E 410 side-by-side double trigger shotgun. Great 410 coach gun. A lot of fun and easy to handle.
Browning “Baby Browning” .25 auto pistol. It’s just a neat little six shot pocket semi-auto. Got this one in the early 80’s I believe.
Remington 12-A pump action .22 long rifle. Great little 12 round 22. It is a joy to shoot, and is my go to for garden varmint control.
Also have a couple World War II bayonets, a few packs of silver eagles, junk silver (coins from before 1964, when they still had silver), and a set of silver flatware.
Safe queen: It would probably be the Browning Gold Hunter just because it’s never been fired. I’ve just never gotten around to shooting it; haven’t even taken the tag off.
Things that I like about it (pros): I’ve had it for about five years, and the lock has never given me any trouble. I’ve never had to have it serviced.. There’s plenty of room to store everything that I need to. I suppose if I pick up some new guns, I can always reorganize things, and store a few in the gun rests on the left side of the safe. There would be plenty of room for that.
I got a decent deal on it. I think it cost $700 delivered at the time.
Things that I don’t like about it (cons): The shelving seems a little flimsy in it (as you can see by the pictures). There’s a pretty heavy amount of ammo on the top shelf, but I didn’t really expect it to bow like it is.
When I first got it, I kind of wished I got an electronic keypad lock, but the manual dial has grown on me. I can open it in about five seconds now, so I guess that’s not really a big deal. No other problems to speak of…it’s been a pretty solid safe.
Final thoughts: I got this safe about five years ago with enough room to keep all my guns, plus a little more. Unfortunately, my gun collection hasn’t grown much at all since, so there’s still plenty of space. I think, with a little reorganization, I could easily fit six more long guns in there in addition to the current contents when I decide to expand my collection.
There haven’t been any break-in attempts on the safe, so I can’t say for sure how secure it is, but I have zero real complaints about it. I’m very satisfied with the purchase.
