Make: Fortress

Model: Fortress FS14E Fire-Resistant Gun Safe

Amount of gun storage advertised: 14

Amount of guns stored: 6 (5 long guns and 1 pistol)

Opened up with plenty of M&P goodness inside.

Where I bought it: Walmart

General contents: Guns, ammo, cash and documents

External configuration: I have it in my basement.  I bolted it to the concrete floor with a hammer drill.

Internal configuration: It’s set up with a high top shelf, where I keep a few magazines and the 1911.  There’s a mid-tier shelf that the jars of cash sit on, along with gun rests cut out for the long guns.  Beneath that is a single partition with a shelf on the right hand side.

Safe accessories: I didn’t purchase any accessories, but the one I got came with a door mounted organizer with a lot of pockets on it.  It’s pretty handy for extra storage.  I have a a cleaning kit and some extra ammunition in the pockets.  Probably some old receipts I thought were important too.

It also came with the bolt kit.

Favorite guns and other notable contents: I don’t keep too many guns in here at the moment, but what you see is a Smith and Wesson M&P 10 .308 WIN, a Smith and Wesson M&P 15 Sport, a Savage 67H 12 gauge, and a Mossberg 500c 20 gauge.  I also have an old Norinco 1911 in there.  Like I said, there are some jars of cash as well.

Savage 67H 12 gauge

Safe queen: My favorite gun in there that I probably shoot the least is the M&P 10.  I haven’t had much time to take it out anywhere where it can really reach out.

Things I like about it (pros): I think I paid $500 for it, which seems pretty cheap compared to other stuff out there.  It’s well over 200 lbs and bolted down, so it seems pretty stout.  The keypad (Secure-All) on it is pretty slick, and was really easy to set up…never had any problems with it.  It also has a little alarm on it that screams when someone guesses wrong too many times.

I’m not sure how the fire protection is tested or how long it keeps the stuff safe (20 minutes), but any bit is a nice bonus.

Electronic keypad lock

Things I don’t like about it (cons): Like I said, I’m pretty happy with it.  The one thing I might be a little upset about is if I bought it and wanted to actually put 14 guns in it.  You can see from the picture that there’s no way it’s fitting 14 guns…maybe not even 10.  I know AR builds take up more space than a bunch of old .22’s but they should probably post a warning or something.

Final thoughts: Good sturdy safe.  It’s really easy to get into with the electronic lock, and the extra fire resistance is a nice touch.  I think it was a pretty good buy.
